This landscape with road and house on the edge of the forest was rendered in ink by Abraham Furnerius. Note the winding path; this symbol, ubiquitous in art across cultures, invites the viewer on a journey. It is a classical motif, evoking the labyrinth of Crete. Similarly, the house, small and humble, represents a space for retreat, akin to the hortus conclusus, which, throughout the Middle Ages, signified sanctuary and contemplation. The landscape as a whole reminds me of landscapes made in both classical Greece and Rome, which symbolized Arcadia, a peaceful paradise. This yearning for a simpler, pastoral existence resonates through time, influencing art from Renaissance paintings to modern-day cinema, demonstrating our collective desire for peace and harmony.
