Eyvind Earle made this dreamlike landscape, “When the Fog Rolls In,” with paint. It’s as if he's rendering a memory. Look at the ochre and brown palette, how it flattens space and creates a deep, resonant mood. The trees are like clusters of dark jewels, carefully placed across the rolling hills. It is a very stylized landscape, each element, from the trees to the fog, is reduced to its simplest form. There’s a tension between representation and abstraction, like a puzzle daring you to solve it. The paint is applied with a meticulous hand, building up layers of color and texture. It feels deliberate, each stroke considered and precise. Earle's work reminds me of the landscapes of Charles Burchfield, both artists had a knack for capturing the sublime in the everyday. Ultimately, Earle's painting invites us to embrace ambiguity and find beauty in the unexpected, turning painting into a kind of visual poem.
