John William Godward created "Tender Thoughts," an oil on canvas, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. Godward had a knack for these kinds of scenes with women in classical dress against Roman or Greek architectural backgrounds. When you look at the marble, the fabric, it's all so meticulously rendered! It's almost photographic, which was something painters were exploring at the time. I wonder, was Godward trying to capture a moment of quiet contemplation, or was he simply after a pretty picture? Maybe both, right? He’s got her draped in these gorgeous, muted greens and purples that just glow. And her posture...the way she leans, it tells a story. She’s lost in her own world, maybe dreaming of something just out of reach. It’s easy to look at this and think of it as academic, but I think there's a vulnerability in it. The painting shows us that artists work with each other across time, creating art that resonates with our human experience.
