This stereoscopic photograph, Kuurtuin in Bad Schwalbach, was created by Johann Friedrich Stiehm. The composition of the image is neatly divided. On either side, buildings frame the scene, their verticality contrasting with the gentle curves of the garden paths. A visual pathway leads the eye into the heart of the image, directing us into the structured natural space. Photography has always grappled with the tension between objective representation and subjective interpretation. Here, the use of stereoscopy, a technique designed to mimic human binocular vision, suggests an aspiration towards objective realism. However, the sepia tone and careful arrangement of elements introduce a layer of aesthetic intention. Ultimately, the photograph functions as both a record and a construction, highlighting how the act of seeing is always mediated. Each viewer brings their own experiences to bear on the image, participating in an ongoing process of meaning-making.
