Christian Attersee made this, *Carinthia, Das Mölltal (A guide through Austria for extraterrestrial beings No. 5)*, with oil paint and a whole lotta imagination! Look at the way the brushstrokes create these strange figures, so raw and immediate. You can almost feel the artist wrestling with the paint, trying to bring these bizarre aliens to life. The colours are wild and unexpected, like a psychedelic dream. Now, check out the texture of the paint, how Attersee layers it on thick in some spots and leaves it thin and translucent in others. It's like he's building up this whole world, one brushstroke at a time. The way he renders the skin of the alien, so fleshy and unreal, it's kind of beautiful and disturbing all at once. Then there's the setting, an alpine scene depicted with a strange naivety. Attersee's work reminds me of other artists who embrace the weird and wonderful, like Henri Rousseau, but with a punk rock twist. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what it all means. Isn't art great?
