Curatorial notes

Nicolas Perelle created this print, "Night Landscape with Two Walkers and Pack Animal," in the 17th century. Consider the social hierarchy of 17th-century Europe, where landscapes often served as a backdrop for human activities, subtly reinforcing our relationship with nature. This night scene offers a romantic view with its dark sky, trees and a path with two figures and their pack animal. But what does it mean to wander at night, accompanied only by an animal? Perhaps it speaks to themes of companionship and solace found in nature. Such scenes can evoke a sense of vulnerability, highlighting our shared humanity through shared experience, and an acknowledgement of our place within the natural world. They invite us to consider our journeys, both literal and metaphorical. Through Perelle’s eyes, we see not just a landscape, but a mirror reflecting our deepest longings and fears.
