This little card shows a photograph of Wilhelmina Gerarda Hoogendijk with, presumably, four family members, sitting on a bench. The whole picture is sepia toned, all browns and creams. It's the kind of palette that whispers of other times, like faded memories. The image is soft, like it was made with real light, you know? They are all so close together, packed together like sardines in a tin, and they hold a sign, but what does it mean? There's something kind of endearing about the fact that the artist is unknown, they are anonymous, perhaps because they knew what they were doing. It reminds me that art's more about a feeling than any hard and fast idea. Like Agnes Martin, the kind of work that can seem minimal but hits you hard, right in the feels. It’s all about feeling your way through, trusting the process, and letting the thing take you where it wants to go.
