Aaron Fastovsky made this drawing of a silver teapot with graphite on paper. The soft, grey tones and delicate shading suggest the artist’s careful observation and attention to detail. The drawing captures the smooth, reflective surface of the teapot. Look at how the light glints off the curves, and how the subtle gradations of tone create a sense of volume and depth. The artist has meticulously rendered the ornate details, like the floral engravings, as well as the dark, solid handle which provides a stark contrast to the rest of the piece. The smaller object beside the teapot is a kind of echo, or shadow of the pot, reminding us that artmaking is always a process of repetition and refinement. This piece is almost like a study in light, shadow and form, where the artist attempts to capture the ever-shifting qualities of light and its effects on reflective surfaces. It’s a wonderful reminder that art is not just about what we see, but how we see it.
