Akira Kanayama made this abstract work using crayon on canvas. He was part of the Gutai Art Association in post-war Japan, a radical group who challenged traditional art forms. Kanayama’s piece seems to reject conventional representation, instead prioritizing spontaneous gesture. This was a period of intense social and cultural change in Japan, following defeat in World War II and the subsequent American occupation.
