This is a photograph by Robert Frank, called "From the Bus, New York." It's a black and white image, the kind that feels raw and immediate, like a snapshot of real life caught on the fly. Frank's use of light and shadow is really striking, almost like he's sculpting the scene with it. There's this one area, the way the light hits the faces of the men in suits, it's so sharp and contrasty that it makes them seem both present and distant. Think about how texture plays into this. The grain of the film, the way the light reflects off their luggage, all these details add up to a feeling of grit and authenticity. You can almost smell the city, hear the rumble of the bus. It reminds me a little of Walker Evans's documentary style, that same sense of just showing things as they are, without any romanticizing. But Frank adds his own personal touch, his own particular brand of poetry, inviting you to find your own truth in the image.
