Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac made this etching of a woman with a slipper, we don't have the date, but isn't it interesting how, even with just a few lines, he captures such a casual moment? Look at the leg, bent at the knee, and the foot reaching for that slipper. There's a real sense of weight and form, all created with these quick, almost scribbled lines. See how he uses the hatching to create shadows and volume? It's like he's thinking out loud, letting us in on his process. The grid, presumably for scaling-up, gives the piece a slightly unfinished or exploratory quality. It reminds me of Cezanne, who used a similar method to break down forms into their basic components. Ultimately, it feels like a conversation between the artist and the subject, a fleeting moment captured in ink. It speaks to the messy, imperfect, and utterly human process of seeing and making.
