Here's a drawing by Harry Goodman, whose life stretched from 1855 to 1995, of what appears to be a pewter mug. I'm interested in the way the lines define the object, how the artist has carefully traced the contours to describe its form in a clear and readable way. It makes me wonder what Goodman was thinking about when he made this. Was he interested in the play of light on the metal? Or the way it felt in his hand? Maybe he was just enjoying the simple act of drawing, letting the lines flow and emerge on the page. What I love about drawing is the way it can capture the essence of something without getting bogged down in details. It’s like a conversation, a back-and-forth between the artist and the subject, where each mark builds on the one before it. And in the end, what emerges is not just a representation of an object, but a record of a mind in action.
