This untitled photograph was created by Thomas Roma sometime in his career. I’m struck by the quiet intensity of this black and white image. It’s like a study in light and shadow, but with so much more going on. The surfaces are soft, almost velvety, drawing me into the intimate scene. It feels like I am intruding on a private moment. I notice how the light catches on the fabric of the robes, creating a subtle texture that contrasts with the smoothness of the faces. Look at the hands of the man resting on the child’s forehead. You can see the creases and lines in his palm, evidence of a life lived. It’s such a simple gesture, but it speaks volumes about care and protection. This piece has some similarities with the documentary work of Roy DeCarava. Both artists capture everyday moments with a deep sense of humanity, embracing the beauty and complexity of life. I always find myself discovering something new each time I look at it.
