These black and white photographs of an unknown child and an unknown man and woman were taken in 1932, possibly in Germany or Austria. I love the photograph of the little girl. The way she's captured mid-stride reminds me of those old Eadweard Muybridge motion studies. The image feels both spontaneous and deliberate, like the photographer was trying to capture something fleeting but also wanted to create a lasting image. The woman, man, and building looming behind them in the other image feel so heavy, so solid and permanent. I can imagine the photographer carefully composing the shot, trying to balance the weight of the architecture with the human presence. Photography is an art of memory, and these images are like little portals into the past. I'm thinking about how artists today use photography to explore their own histories and identities, and how the act of taking a picture can be a way of making sense of the world. I feel such a sense of connection, as if we're all part of one big conversation across time.
