Augustinus Terwesten created this etching, "Mozes wordt gevonden door de dochter van de farao", the Finding of Moses, using a variety of etched lines to define the figures. The image is structured by a contrast between the light, open sky and the densely worked landscape of tangled trees and foliage, all rendered in shades of gray. Note how Terwesten uses line to distinguish form. Observe the delicate, almost tentative strokes that model the figures’ drapery and flesh, yet also lend them a sense of depth and volume. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: on the left, the infant Moses in his basket, balanced by the cluster of figures on the right who respond to this discovery with gestures of surprise and curiosity. Terwesten uses the graphic medium to explore the contrast between the natural world and the human drama unfolding within it. This complex interplay of line and form suggests a world where divine intervention and human agency intersect, prompting ongoing interpretation.
