The City of Karlovac 1995

Alfred Freddy Krupa created "The City of Karlovac," a 40 by 50 cm artwork, using ink on paper. The drawing presents an immediate visual experience of minimalist simplicity; the sepia ink lines dance across the light background to create an open and airy composition. Krupa's use of line is particularly striking. Varying in thickness and intensity, the lines delineate architectural forms and natural elements with an economy of means. The skeletal structure of the buildings and the organic shapes of the trees are rendered with a raw, almost calligraphic quality. This interplay between representation and abstraction destabilizes conventional modes of seeing, inviting us to engage with the underlying structure of the scene. The artwork challenges fixed meanings by presenting a subjective, almost ephemeral interpretation of urban space.
