This untitled painting by Georgi Kovachev is full of dreamy blue hues punctuated by yellow and orange. The artist has made a very physical painting. You can see how the heavy impasto brush strokes shift, building into the image— emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I think about what it might have been like to create it and wonder what Kovachev was thinking when he made it? I imagine him layering color and texture, adding thin washes, and building up the surface with thick daubs of paint. The artist uses color to define shapes in an emotional and creative way. Look at that dominant stroke of blue and how it communicates feeling and meaning. I'm reminded of the work of other painters interested in landscape, color and brushwork. Artists are always in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is an embodied expression, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
