About this artwork
Léon Laroche made this print of a dresser and table, which I guess were the latest thing at the time. I'm really taken by how the simple rendering brings forward the bare bones of these objects. It's a kind of architectural drawing, but for furniture, where the real subject is the way decoration sits on structure. The artist's marks have a lightness to them, it's kind of like they're floating. And the colour palette is just a whisper of browns and beiges. It makes me think of Agnes Martin, who also worked with understated lines and colours. Both artists find a way to create these intimate, quiet works which manage to be both abstract and deeply personal. It goes to show how a few lines can carry so much feeling.
