Pierre Bonnard created this image of two card players by lamp at a table, using lithography. Bonnard was a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde artists Les Nabis, who believed that art should express personal spiritual beliefs, similar to the symbolist movement. Consider this interior scene, where the subjects are absorbed in their game under the warm glow of a lamp. Bonnard's artistic circle often focused on intimate domestic scenes. But who are these people, and what is their relationship to each other? The print invites us to imagine their lives, their social class, and the nature of their interactions. The players are immersed in a game which perhaps reveals a moment of leisure, or perhaps a serious competition. Bonnard, like other members of Les Nabis, sought to imbue their art with emotional and subjective meaning. "Twee kaartspelers bij lamp aan tafel" gives us a glimpse into the everyday life of people, seen through the lens of intimacy.
