Curator: David Leverett's "Lost Horizons," from the Tate Collections, immediately strikes me with its layered, almost ghostly quality. There is text interwoven with geometric shapes. Editor: Absolutely. The juxtaposition of the textual layer with the shapes certainly draws attention to the labor involved. The piece looks like a print, doesn’t it? How do you think Leverett's process informs the work's meaning, given its context? Curator: I feel a strong sense of placelessness, of being untethered. Perhaps it reflects the artist's preoccupation with memory and the construction of identity in a world that is constantly changing. Editor: Memory and identity are powerful themes here. But let's also consider the material conditions that enabled this work. The availability of certain printing technologies, the socio-economic factors influencing artistic production at the time... Curator: A compelling point. It does make you consider the intersection between the personal and the political. Editor: Indeed. Thinking about how various systems of support and production contribute to the existence of art like this helps us move towards a more complete understanding.
