Agnes Martin made this delicate grid with pencil and ink on off-white paper, and it's called “Aspiration.” I can picture her at work, maybe using a ruler, but probably just her eye, making each line with a kind of reverence. The grid is so simple, yet so complex, because it’s not perfect. The lines waver and shift, like a breath or a heartbeat, they seem very human. I think the slight imperfections are what make it so moving. It reminds me of Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings, but instead of being cold and conceptual, this grid feels warm. It’s as if the grid is a map of her inner world, the aspiration of the title, a yearning for something beyond the everyday. These quiet works are easy to overlook, but they're really powerful. They show that art doesn't always need to be loud or flashy to be meaningful. There is an exchange of ideas and inspiration, as if the language of painting is passed between generations.
