This print of Prince Maurits Stadhouder of the United Provinces, whose title translates roughly to Governor, was made by J. Noman. It functioned as propaganda meant to promote the House of Orange. Considered through the lens of masculinity, it’s striking how Prince Maurits is depicted as a ruler. He is not just on a horse, but on a rearing horse, a symbol of power and control. Look at his clothing, which casts him in armor. The text above him translates to 'Example of bravery and wise policy,' emphasizing the virtues expected of a leader. But it also is important to note that such displays of power were inextricably linked to the subjugation of others. The image was designed to evoke feelings of national pride and confidence in leadership, but the identity of the nation it represented was inextricably bound to the exclusion of those who didn't fit its mold. Consider the social structures it was created to uphold.
