Wassily Kandinsky made this untitled oil on canvas painting at a time when he was finding new ways to express himself using an abstract vocabulary of colours, lines, and forms. Look at the way he layers blues, yellows, and reds to create a sense of depth, and how his brushstrokes suggest a world in motion. I wonder if he closed his eyes and moved his hand quickly, and the colours landed in the right place by accident? I know that feeling. Kandinsky believed that painting could express the inner spiritual life, much like music. He thought about how forms and colors interact to create harmony or discord, how the surface is activated, and how the painting invites us to imagine new connections between things. Many artists are trying to create new visual languages, and Kandinsky was definitely one of the most important. He encouraged other artists to see beyond the surface of things, inspiring future generations to embrace experimentation and explore the boundless possibilities of abstract expression.
