This is "Opgetuigd paard aan een leidsel," or "Harnessed Horse on a Leash" made by George Jooss, sometime in the early to mid 1800s. Jooss’s depiction of the harnessed horse offers a glimpse into the period's agrarian lifestyle and social hierarchies. Horses were essential for transportation, agriculture, and military activities. They were also a signifier of wealth and status. Consider the horse's posture; it stands patiently, covered, in front of a simple stable. What does this imply about its role? Is it one of labor, status, or something else? Jooss was working during a time of Romanticism, where artists often explored themes of nature, emotion, and the sublime. The horse, a symbol of strength and freedom, might also reflect these ideals. Yet, harnessed, it also represents the constraints placed upon nature by human society. This work reflects both the societal reliance on animals and the evolving relationship between humans and the natural world.
