Aaron Siskind made this gelatin silver print called Gloucester (Glove) at an unknown date. The textures and tones in this photo are delicious! The way the light catches the grain of the wood, the worn leather of the glove, it’s almost like a tactile experience. Siskind has a knack for finding these little moments, elevating the mundane into something almost monumental. Look how he frames the glove, so that it fills the space, becoming almost monumental, like a sculpture. I love the nail heads popping out from the edges of the wood; they look like little dots, almost like someone has carefully placed them there. They're these small details that bring it to life, that make you feel like you're right there, touching the wood, feeling the rough texture of the glove. It reminds me of some of the early abstract expressionists, like Franz Kline, who found beauty in the everyday, in the textures and rhythms of urban life. Just like them, Siskind shows us that art is everywhere, if we just take the time to look.
