Oleksandr Aksinin created this mysterious piece, “Tibetan Fairy Tales,” during a time of artistic suppression in the Soviet Union. Aksinin and other Ukranian artists had to navigate the complexities of expressing themselves under a regime that valued socialist realism above all else. This image, with its deep blues and blacks, evokes a sense of the night, or perhaps the unknown depths of the subconscious. The title suggests a connection to Tibetan culture, but filtered through Aksinin’s personal lens, perhaps offering a hidden commentary on cultural and personal freedom. The use of simple shapes and the stark contrast between light and dark create a sense of tension, as if the "fairy tales" are both beautiful and foreboding. The delicate green dots which edge parts of the image, remind me of stars, or perhaps a coded message. The dreamlike quality invites introspection, asking us to consider the stories we tell ourselves and the hidden meanings within them, especially in times of constraint.
