Editor: This is "Sketch of Crawling Child," by William Valentine Schevill, housed here at Harvard. It's just a simple pencil sketch, but there's something so tender about it. What do you see in this little drawing? Curator: Ah, the ephemeral quality of life rendered in pencil! For me, it's a whisper of potential energy. All those soft curves imply movement, don't they? Makes me wonder what that baby is reaching for, what new world is unfolding just beyond the edge of the paper. Editor: I didn't think about it that way, I just thought it was cute. It’s about the possibilities, the sense of discovery. Thank you! Curator: Absolutely! It just goes to show how much a simple sketch can make you think.
