René Magritte made Territory with oil on canvas, and it’s like he’s inviting us into a dream where the rules of gravity are, well, up in the air. Look at that tree. It’s so carefully rendered, but then it’s just floating on a little island in the sky. Magritte’s painting is so smooth, and the way he blends the colors makes it seem almost photographic, yet totally unreal. The paint isn’t thick, but the details make it seem like you could just reach out and touch the leaves. There’s something unsettling about the stillness of the scene. It’s like Magritte is saying, “Here’s a landscape you know, but what if it didn’t behave the way you expect?” It reminds me of de Chirico. They both use a realistic painting style to create these totally surreal, thought-provoking images. Art is about disrupting expectations, not confirming them.
