This is Johann Martin Bernigeroth’s portrait of Christian Roch, made as an etching. Bernigeroth was active in the 18th century, a period marked by the Enlightenment and burgeoning mercantile activity. This piece reflects the era’s evolving notions of identity and status. Christian Roch, identified as a 'Kauf und Handelmann' or merchant, is depicted not as a member of the aristocracy, but as a man of commerce. Notice how Roch is framed within an oval, draped with fabric, and set atop a pedestal. This classicizing form elevates him, suggesting a new form of meritocracy where wealth and trade could place someone in a position deserving a formal portrait. While the image certainly suggests power, it also retains a human element in Roch's gaze and the softness of his features. Bernigeroth straddles the line between traditional representation and the emergence of a new social order, capturing some of the shifting sands of 18th-century society.
