This image captures a stone carving that forms part of the tomb of Pope Clemens II in Bamberg Cathedral. It was made by an anonymous artist. The composition is dominated by the figure of Justice, seated, and holding a balance scale. Beside her, there’s a hefty sword, signifying, presumably, the force behind Justice. I can imagine the sculptor, someone unknown to us, chipping away at the stone, feeling the weight of each strike. The texture of the stone gives the figure a sense of weightiness and permanence but it also reminds me of how time affects all things. I like how the anonymous artist approached this figure. They were likely thinking about the kind of justice that transcends earthly power, something that will stand the test of time. I think they wanted the image to invoke our humanity, to remind us of the importance of holding ourselves accountable. These artists are in conversation with one another, aren’t they? Inspiring, and building upon each other’s creativity.
