Dimensions 33.1 Ã 25.7 cm (13 1/16 Ã 10 1/8 in.)
Editor: This drawing, "Christ Carrying the Cross," attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Giovenone, depicts a very sorrowful scene. What stands out to you when you look at this work? Curator: I see a powerful representation of suffering and resilience, deeply embedded in a history of oppression. How does Giovenone’s work engage with contemporary discussions about power, injustice, and resistance? Editor: That's a fascinating perspective. I hadn't considered the idea of "resistance" within the suffering. Curator: Consider the gaze of the figures accompanying Christ, some seem to extend a hand, maybe a sign of solidarity? How does Giovenone depict them in relation to the central figure and the state actors surrounding them? Editor: This makes me think differently about religious art and its relevance to social justice movements. Thank you. Curator: Absolutely. Art always provides a lens through which to examine history and its relation to today's ongoing struggles.
