This is Henryk Glicenstein's print of Saint Francis. Born in Poland in 1870, Glicenstein was part of a generation of Jewish artists navigating the complexities of identity in a rapidly changing world. Here, Saint Francis is depicted atop a donkey, his hands raised towards birds perched in the trees. Francis was known for his deep connection to nature and his radical commitment to poverty. Glicenstein produced this work during a period of intense social upheaval, including World War I and the rise of antisemitism in Europe. Perhaps Glicenstein was drawn to the image of Saint Francis as a figure of peace and humility in a world increasingly defined by conflict and division. The image resonates today, reminding us of the importance of empathy, and offering solace amidst the complexities of contemporary life.
