Editor: This is Elena Prentice's "Landscape," done in watercolor. I'm struck by its quietness, the way the muted tones create a sense of stillness. How do you interpret this work in the context of landscape art? Curator: The social function of landscape painting is often to reinforce a sense of belonging and national identity. Here, however, the ambiguity of the scene resists such easy categorization. Do you notice how the lack of specific details makes it difficult to place geographically? Editor: Yes, it could be anywhere. So, it's not really about a particular place? Curator: Perhaps it is more about the feeling of a place, and how that feeling is shaped by individual experience rather than collective identity. It's about the personal rather than the political landscape. Editor: That's a great point; I hadn't considered that shift in perspective. Curator: Indeed, and it alters how we approach such imagery.
