Curator: What immediately strikes me is the explicit labor involved in the mark-making. The repetitive, linear strokes of ink, seemingly without the desire to fully capture depth through traditional shading techniques, foreground the process of production itself. What relationship do you think exists between the chosen materials, ink and paper, and the subject matter? Editor: Hmm, the starkness of the ink does seem to objectify the figure somewhat. Was that common at the time this piece was made? Curator: Exactly, how might the availability and affordability of ink and paper have influenced artistic choices and access to art production more broadly? I’m intrigued by the flattening of the form, its link with readily available resources. How could it make art practices and their corresponding images more approachable? Editor: That’s fascinating! The image feels almost democratic in its simplicity, removing barriers between the artist and the subject as well as between the artwork and the viewers. Curator: Precisely! Consider then how the act of drawing itself becomes democratized when art moves away from mastering complex techniques toward highlighting its basic materiality. The linear quality pushes it towards reproducibility too, I wonder what role that could play? Editor: I hadn't thought of it that way.
