This print of a graveyard scene in Java was made by Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp. It's fascinating how Nieuwenkamp uses just a few lines to conjure up this landscape. Look at the tree on the left, how the lines drip down like Spanish moss, heavy and laden, suggesting humidity. The artist scratched these marks into the plate with such precision, and the density of the marks creates a very particular mood and atmosphere. You can see how he varies the pressure and rhythm of the lines to bring the scene to life. Notice how the artist captures the textures of the foliage with so much energy. It reminds me a little bit of the etchings of Hercules Segers, another artist who found ways to bring new painterly dimensions to printmaking. Art is a conversation and exchange of ideas across time and space, always open to interpretation.
