"Ziet, lieve kindren! in deez' prent / Een reeks verscheidenheden, / Hier wordt natuur en kunst vertoond, / En 's landsmans werk en zeden" (See, dear children! in this print / A series of diversities, / Here nature and art are shown, / And the countryman's work and customs), created by Dutch artist Gerrit Oortman (1781-1822), is a series of 24 small images printed on one page that depict a variety of Dutch country life scenes. Oortman's print, now housed in the Rijksmuseum, is a prime example of the 19th century Dutch genre known as “volkspraak”, or “folk speech,” which focused on everyday life, especially of the working class. The artwork is filled with small details and humor, capturing the everyday struggles and joys of Dutch rural life. This small-scale print likely served as a children’s book or teaching tool for young learners.
