Irene Lawson made this drawing of a comb, probably with watercolor, at an unknown date. The comb sits in the center of the page like an object in a still life. But it also feels a little like a specimen, pinned in place. The way the teeth of the comb are rendered is so satisfying: each one slightly rounded at the end, like a little foot. Look at how the tones in the body of the comb shift from dark to light, suggesting depth and dimension. These dark reds and browns are glossy, the color of caramel. The artist has built these up through layers to create something rich and complex. I like how the object has been captured so attentively. The placement of the comb on the page gives the image a sense of understated elegance. This kind of quiet observation feels akin to the work of Giorgio Morandi; everyday objects elevated through attention and care. Isn't it funny how a simple drawing can open up so many possibilities?
