This is a photographic reproduction of “The Dance of Mary Magdalene” by Lucas van Leyden, made by Alexandre, a photographer, in the 19th century. In this albumen print, the image is created through a chemical process involving silver salts. The choice of albumen, derived from egg whites, as a binding agent, speaks to the alchemical nature of early photography. The texture is smooth but with subtle variations in tone. The sepia color, typical of albumen prints, adds a sense of nostalgia. What interests me most is the reproduction of Leyden’s work by photographic means. This was a time of huge debates about mechanical reproduction and its impact on art and culture. Here, photography is in service to a history of painting and printmaking. Understanding the materials and processes involved in creating this reproduction allows us to appreciate its value as both a historical document, and a testament to the evolving relationship between art, technology, and labor.
