Jacob Kornerup's etching presents us with Roskilde Cathedral, its spires piercing the sky, symbols of upward reaching, of aspiration. Dominating the structure is the cross atop each spire, an ancient symbol predating Christianity. A cross represents the intersection of the earthly and divine, a nexus of time and eternity. Consider its echoes in the Egyptian ankh, or even the simple act of crossing fingers. Here, its form is inextricably linked with the Christian narrative of sacrifice and redemption, a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. Observe how the cathedral’s architectural lines draw the eye heavenward. This evokes a sense of longing, a collective memory harking back to pagan temples and sacred groves. The cathedral becomes a vessel, carrying within it centuries of human yearning. The cross, the spire, the ascending lines – all resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings, in our ever-repeating human narrative.
