About this artwork
Viggo Pedersen painted this landscape, "An Uprooted Road Under Old Trees," using oil on canvas. Pedersen lived and worked during a time of significant social change, as Denmark was transitioning from an agrarian to an industrial society, and his art often reflects the simple, rural life that was gradually disappearing. In his work, figures are deeply embedded into the landscape. Rather than offering a grand narrative about nature, Pedersen draws our attention to the intimate, almost tactile experience of the world around us. Notice how the rutted path and the dark silhouettes of the trees create a powerful sense of depth, pulling us into the scene. In doing so, Pedersen seems to ask: who has walked this path, and where are they going? We are left with a sense of the transient nature of both the land and the lives it sustains.
