Hans Borrebach made "Joop zwaait naar een auto die komt aanrijden" with ink on paper, and what strikes me first is the line – so confident, so sure. It’s got this comic book feel, but it's also deeply observational, like Borrebach is trying to capture a real moment, a fleeting gesture. Look at how the black ink pools in the shadows of Joop's sweater, creating depth and texture. The sweater pattern is almost hypnotic, a field of crosses that contrasts with the smooth, dark void of his trousers. And then there's that car, rendered with such economy, yet so full of character. It's a dance between precision and looseness. It reminds me a little of George Grosz, that same sense of social observation, rendered with a kind of acidic wit. Ultimately, it’s a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, a game of telephone played across time and space.
