Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing, ‘Studieblad, onder andere met een knielende vrouw’, with graphite on paper. The artist is working in a time-honored tradition of academic study. In the nineteenth century, drawing was seen as a fundamental skill, and a means of understanding the world. Here, the figures are captured in a variety of poses, each carefully rendered. Notice the layering of marks, the artist testing out different lines and tones to capture the essence of each subject. The figures are not idealized, but presented with a sense of realism, as the artist hones their skills. Drawings like these are often seen as preliminary works, yet they also show us the artist's process of thinking and making. This piece reminds us that all finished artworks begin with a process, that all artwork emerges from a context and culture. And that the distinctions between art and craft are far from clear.
