This small photograph, Huizen in Bireuen, shows some houses in a landscape – it’s just so open to interpretation, it's beautiful! The tones aren’t dramatic; they're more hushed and subtle, which gives the piece a slightly melancholic feel. You can almost smell the rain, can’t you? Look how soft the focus is. If you’re a painter like me, you can really get into the physical thing of the medium. The light is really amazing. It has these different densities and qualities. What else can we say about it? Photography is so interesting because it's always trying to tell a story and often telling one that wasn't planned. It reminds me of the work of John Divola, who photographed abandoned houses in similar way. Like all good photographs, it’s more about questions than answers!
