This is Vessel, made by an artist from the Mangbetu people. This ceramic vessel has an elongated head and is decorated with patterns that mimic the traditional hairstyles and scarification practices of the Mangbetu people. I really love the way it's crafted, and I can almost feel the artist’s hands shaping the clay, coaxing it into this elegant form. You can imagine the artist thinking about the shape of the head, the curve of the neck, and the way the patterns would catch the light. I wonder, did they think about the vessel as a portrait, a representation of a person, or more like a symbol, an embodiment of cultural identity? The smooth, earthy tones create a sense of warmth. It’s amazing how artists across time and cultures engage in a continuous dialogue, inspiring each other to explore new ways of seeing and representing the world around us. This work is a celebration of human creativity and cultural expression, and it reminds us of the power of art to connect us to one another and to the past.
