Here’s an image made by Jack Davis, probably with watercolor, gouache, and ink. It features Huckleberry Fink and some kind of enraged genie, mid-battle. I imagine Davis in his studio, mixing vibrant yellows and purples, capturing the chaos with such energetic strokes. It makes me think about how humor in painting can be a way of seeing the world. Look how he’s built up the genie's form with layers of diluted purple, allowing the white of the paper to shine through, giving it that ethereal, smoky feel. I feel like he's using this character almost to poke fun at the art world. That single line describing the genie’s trajectory, punctuated by a spray and scattering bugs—it's all so expressive and dynamic! It's like Davis is saying, "Hey, let's not take ourselves too seriously." Artists, right? Always riffing off each other, inspiring and challenging each other across time and space. Painting’s just an ongoing conversation, an embodied expression where ambiguity and uncertainty are part of the game, leaving us room to make our own sense of it all.
