Larry Fink made this gelatin silver print, Julie, Martins Creek, Pennsylvania, but when exactly, who knows? It’s got this real contrast thing going on, like a chiaroscuro party where the shadows are having way more fun. The light doesn't muck around, it creates this crisp division, which is kinda how I mix colors when I’m painting, not blending, more like butting right up next to each other. Look at the wall behind her, the message "Come Home John." It’s just there, flat, a little ghostly. It makes you wonder about John. What’s the story? What's Julie thinking? Fink’s other photos, especially the ones of society parties, they have this same raw, confrontational energy, but this, this is something else. Like Nan Goldin, maybe? But less direct, more like a feeling, or a memory. It’s not about answers, it’s about the questions.
