Luis Álvarez Roure made this large painting, "Autumn," on canvas with what looks like confident, gestural brushstrokes of orange, ochre and brown. I imagine the canvas was on a wall or easel in front of him, and he was stepping back to look at it as he made it, and as the figure began to emerge, how carefully he worked, with a sense of freedom and ease, even though the work is so precise. What was he listening to, I wonder? I imagine that he lost himself in the touch of the brush, in the smell of the oil paint, and in the colours of his palette. I particularly like the movement of the ochre, the way it sweeps around the figure, the rhythm and the feeling of the season, a time of change and reflection. Thinking about the artists who came before him, it is a continuation of an ongoing exchange between painters as we are all working through ideas, seeing and feeling the world. Painting is a way to be, think and inquire.
