Requena Nozal's untitled painting is an exploration of process, it seems to me. Look at the textures, built up layer upon layer! The white paint, thick and almost sculptural, sprawls across the canvas like a vine, or maybe even a lace curtain. But it’s a strange kind of lace, where the gaps are as important as the threads, the negative space as alive as the positive. I think Nozal is showing us how paintings can be built, mark by mark, decision by decision. The paint isn’t just applied, it’s almost grown, each stroke a response to the one before. The bold colour choices underneath the white web, like flashes of hidden emotion, are quite striking. It reminds me of some of the pattern paintings of the 80's. Whether intentional or not, the piece embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
