George Hendrik Breitner made this sketch of buildings with pencil on paper. It's a flurry of lines and rudimentary shapes, inviting us into the artist’s process of seeing and abstracting. The composition is a dance of verticals and horizontals, where rectangular forms suggest buildings, scaffolding and architectural elements. Note the bare minimum of detail. Breitner doesn’t present a complete picture, instead hinting at form. This sparseness challenges our perception of space. It’s a semiotic exercise, where basic lines stand in for complex structures. The sketch embodies a modern sensibility where the act of seeing and representing is as important as the subject itself. The sketch's openness refuses a fixed interpretation. It exists as a dynamic interplay of line and form.
