"The Grand Vizier Crossing the Atmeydanı (Horse Square)" by Jean Baptiste Vanmour, painted between 1720 and 1737, depicts a grand procession through the Atmeydanı in Istanbul, Turkey. The painting showcases a panoramic view of the city, with the iconic Süleymaniye Mosque dominating the skyline, its minarets piercing the clear blue sky. The artwork captures a moment of grandeur and spectacle, with a large group of figures, likely representing the Grand Vizier and his entourage, traversing the square. The detailed rendering of the city's architecture, the vibrant colors of the costumes, and the naturalism of the figures all contribute to a compelling scene of Ottoman life in the early 18th century. This painting offers a glimpse into the history of Istanbul and the visual culture of the era.

The Atmeydanı was Istanbul’s large, central square. Two obelisks recall the fact that the area had been a hippodrome in ancient times. The grand vizier, on horse-back at lower right centre, is accompanied by soldiers and preceded by two servants. They carry a prayer rug and a cushion in case he is called to prayer while en route.
